BIRTHSTONE HISTORY

Did you know that birthstones date back to biblical times?

Aaron, high priest of the Hebrews, was said to have a breastplate studded with twelve gemstones symbolizing the twelve sons of Jacob, the choice of stones dictated by the time of their births. In 40 AD, historian Titus Flavius Josephus linked birthstones to the twelve signs of the Zodiac, attributing talismanic powers to them deriving from their respective astrological signs.

Our modern practice of wearing birthstones began with the gem traders of 18th century Poland, and was finally approved in 1912 by the US National Association of Jewelers.
